#CityHallTrashesSalem

With the removal of trash cans at Riley Plaza, our city has proven that it is committed to seeing our community spaces decline for the sake of driving homeless people out of public view.
Sign our petition below to demand trash cans be returned to Riley Plaza, and our public spaces be a place we can all call home.

About

We are a coalition of Salem residents including business owners, long-time residents, recent transplants, and unhoused people brought together to combat growing anti-homeless sentiment in our city. We are committed to putting the voices of our unhoused community first, and fight for change through projects led by and for them.We are not a charity, and operate using principals of mutual aid, focused on putting those who are most impacted by decisions in control of those decisions.

Past Actions

This year has been busy! Some of our biggest actions have happened this season, and hopefully next season will be just as impactful!

  • Removed Anti-panhandling Signs with the help of city council, opening a dialogue between residents and city officials as to who our public spaces are for

  • Directly Aided community members with food, transportation, supplies, and hotel assistance

  • Organized an Emergency Warming shelter at St. James church during the coldest weather Salem had seen since 2016

  • Organized a Mayoral Forum For The Homeless To raise concerns directly to mayoral candidates and the public, and make it known what the real concerns are from our community members

  • Opposed the amendment to Article 24 Organized public comment against the amendment to article 24, which would make tent camping illegal in Salem.

Current Projects

We have a lot of projects working at any given time. Each week we try to set small goals that can be accomplished between each meeting, to keep our action focused and effective.

  • Laundry day On the first Saturday of every month, WCA runs a same day laundry service for the community.

  • Revitalize the Community Fridge installed by Solidarity Northshore, and create a reliable source of free food for members of our community
